Building Learning Power

What is BLP?

“An approach to help young people to become better learners both in school and out… it’s about creating a culture that cultivates habits and attitudes that enable young people to face difficulty and uncertainty calmly, confidently and creatively.”
(Professor Guy Claxton – founder of BLP)

At English Martyrs we are passionate about developing children’s skills to become life-long learners. Building Learning Power is built on four main principles, known as the “4Rs”: Resilience, Reciprocity, Reflectiveness and Resourcefulness.

We are at the beginning our journey of BLP and we have introduced it to the children with an assembly centred on ‘Getting unstuck’. It involves a shift in thinking from being worried about being stuck to celebrating that feeling and exploring strategies to get unstuck.

Each class will have a ‘get stuck’ display in their classroom and we will be giving an award to the Class of the week to celebrate their achievements in getting stuck and unstuck.

Stuck On An Escalator

This video is a great demonstration that when we get stuck, we shouldn't just wait for someone to come and help us but need to 'take steps' ourselves.
