Curriculum Intent- PE

Pride, Respect and Enjoyment

PE is crucial for children’s future health and well-being and as such is an important part of the school curriculum.  At English Martyrs our PE moto is: Pride, Respect and Enjoyment, which we believe is the foundation for our sporting curriculum.

It is our intent that all children will understand that regular exercise is important for a healthy lifestyle, for both their body and mental well-being through their learning in PE, Science and RSHE.

At English Martyrs we offer a broad and balanced PE curriculum that ensures participation by all children.  Pupils, whatever their ability build upon their existing skills, through a carefully planned PE curriculum, which builds upon prior learning and experiences.

Children have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills, through the school curriculum and external visitors and sports providers, so they can experience a range of sports, to widen the possibilities and opportunities that children in the 21st Century can pursue.

PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving.  It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.  Beyond merely a subject, we believe that participation in sporting activity is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are proud of the community in which they belong.  Children are taught to observe and produce the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators in line with our sporting values pride, respect and enjoyment.

Swimming and the National Curriculum

Since 1994, swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the national curriculum for physical education in England.

This means that every 11-year old child should leave primary school with the skills to keep themselves safe while enjoying swimming with friends and family.

The three National Curriculum outcomes

At English Martyrs we provide swimming and water safety lessons for children in KS2.

Our swimming lessons help support children to be able to achieve the following:

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations
  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
