Home learning

Reading

In Early Years our main focus for learning at home is reading. Your child will bring colour banded books home to read, suitable to their ability. We encourage you to read with your child every day. The skills in reading are not just decoding but also comprehension, understanding what you or they have read and picking up new vocabulary. To communicate about your child’s reading you can write on Tapestry by adding an observation, or record it in the reading record that we will send home with your child. We shall also add our own Tapestry observations to share the reading we have been completing in class.

In addition to the decoding and comprehension side of reading. We also focus on reading and writing red words (cannot be segmented and blended). As your child settles into school, we shall send home a 'home learning' book which contains the 'tricky words' that the children will learn in Early Years, and the 'song of sounds' phonics finder which we use to support their learning of letters and sounds.

More information will be provided when we have our 'settling in, settling down' session in October.

Phonics

We follow the Song of Sounds programme which is a song based approach to learning. We will let you know what sounds we are focusing on weekly and give some ideas of ways to practise.

Maths

We teach Maths through the White Rose Scheme which uses a play based approach linked to key texts. We are passionate about giving our children a secure understanding of number, pattern and shape which are the building blocks for being confident mathematicians. Extra Learning

If your child needs some additional support, we will provide you with the resources to support this at home. There are also some useful links to support home learning on the Tapestry website. If there is anything you feel could help though, please feel free to meet with us and we can support this.
