Early Reading and Phonics

From September 2026, we are excited to be introducing Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our approach to the teaching of phonics and early reading.

While Little Wandle is widely recognised as a phonics programme, we believe it offers so much more than that. At its heart is a commitment to helping every child become a confident, fluent reader who develops both "the skill and the will". Little Wandle recognises that successful readers need not only the ability to read, but also a genuine love of books and reading.

What particularly appeals to us is the belief that every child can and should become a proficient reader, regardless of their starting point. Through high-quality teaching, carefully matched reading practice and timely support, Little Wandle is designed to help every child experience success.

This aspiration strongly reflects our own mission at English Martyrs, where we seek to "accept each child as they are and to enable them to develop their full potential." We believe that learning to read is one of the most important ways in which children can grow in confidence and independence.

We love that Little Wandle includes dedicated support for children who may need additional help through its Rapid Catch-up and SEND programmes, ensuring that children are supported at the right level and can continue to make progress alongside their peers.

As we begin this exciting journey, we look forward to working in partnership with children, staff and families to develop confident readers, enthusiastic book lovers and lifelong learners.
